What is Wordle?
Wordle is that one game where simplicity meets obsession. You get six attempts to guess a mystery five-letter word and it’s the same for everyone, everywhere. Created by Josh Wardle in 2021 as a gift for his partner, Wordle quickly went viral, especially after he added that now-iconic emoji grid for sharing scores.
In 2022, The New York Times acquired it, and since then, Wordle has become a global daily habit with over 5.3 billion games played in 2024 alone. Whether you’re on the NYT app, browser, Meta Quest, or even Discord, chances are, you’ve played it or at least seen someone brag about it.
How to Play Wordle
Type in any five-letter word to begin. If a letter is correct and in the right spot, it turns green. If it’s in the word but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it doesn’t belong at all, it’s greyed out. Simple, right? But don’t be fooled, it’s rarely easy.
The game resets at midnight based on your local time, and your progress can be tracked if you’ve got an NYT account linked.
