Xbox Slashes Outer Worlds 2 Price to $70 After Backlash, Offers Refunds

Xbox reduces The Outer Worlds 2 price from $80 to $70 and issues refunds to pre-order customers.

Looks like Xbox has had a change of heart.

After initially announcing The Outer Worlds 2 would be priced at $80 making it their most expensive title yet Xbox has now decided to stick with a $70 price point instead. That means if you already pre-ordered the game for $80, don’t worry you’ll be getting that $10 back.
An Xbox spokesperson confirmed the decision to IGN, saying:

“We’re focused on bringing players incredible worlds to explore, and will keep our full priced holiday releases, including The Outer Worlds 2, at $69.99 – in line with current market conditions.”

Why the U-turn?

Just a few weeks ago, Xbox said the higher price was due to “market conditions and the rising cost of development.” But fans weren’t happy especially given that The Outer Worlds is known for critiquing capitalism. Many felt the $80 tag clashed with the game’s message.

What happens to existing pre-orders?

Xbox says players who paid the higher price will receive refunds through the platform or store where they made the purchase. You’ll likely get a notification soon, but depending on the seller, it might take a few days to process.

This pricing reversal follows growing frustration from gamers across the industry. While game companies often cite higher development costs, fans feel like they’re being priced out of the hobby. Earlier this year, Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford stirred controversy by implying that real fans would pay $80 for Borderlands 4, a statement that didn’t go over well. (That game, too, ended up being $70.)

It’s good to see Xbox actually listening. “The Outer Worlds 2” price rollback shows they’re paying attention to feedback. Gamers don’t mind paying for quality but sudden hikes don’t sit well. This move might restore some trust. If you pre-ordered at the old price, expect your refund soon. Let’s hope this isn’t just a one-time fix.

So, for now Xbox is hitting pause on $80 games at least this holiday season.
